Intention

The intent is to provide a safe atmosphere where participants experience and become aware of life options. These options might relate to: Attitudes, Perceptions, Beliefs, Interpretations, Behaviors and Actions.

Overview
o The process provides teachable moments where participants become aware of circumstances related to life configuration patterns. When these situations occur there is an opportunity to reflect, discuss, dialogue; and if comfortable express and/or commit to desired change.
o Key components of the ITEM model are the utilization of group process dynamics, experience learning, and change facilitation; and to encourage a sense of presence, awareness and the personal transformation process.
o The ITEM model utilizes group facilitation. The process of group dynamics has potential for many therapeutic positive.

Change and the Transformational Process
Change is always happening. Persons’ can allow positive change and/or they can find ways to sabotage themselves.
The Change Facilitation process encourages the process of positive change which includes faith, awareness, learning, and acceptance.
The primary assumption is our individual experiences can be a catalyst for learning, wellness, growth and healing.
Positive change with focus, commitment, and determination can be transformational; and the healing process may include: emotions and feelings related to the past; the present; current situations; and the future.

Life Configuration Patterns
The ITEM model includes 5 major categories and 17 Life Configuration Patterns (LCP). These life themes represent a full spectrum of the dynamics of living. The LCP themes and sub-themes provide the basis for the facilitation plan. The ITEM model is very fluid and is adaptable to a variety of participants and facilitation settings.

Program Focus Options
o Life learning education and training
o Awareness and human potential
o Medical and psychiatric inpatient and outpatient settings.

Venue Options
o An introductory session is available for wellness, healthcare, hospice, and/or education professionals. This session includes an overview of the dynamics of the ITEM model, an interactive experiential process, followed by a discussion of the facilitation dynamics. Time duration can range from 40 to 100 minutes; and it is best to have at least 4 participants.
o Therapeutic sessions usually require at least 8 to 14 participants with duration of 90 to 110 minutes; and a minimum of two weeks between sessions.
o The ITEM group facilitation process can also accommodate larger groups pertinent to meetings, conferences, seminars, and public events.

o Can ITEM improve patient’s sense of wellbeing and encourage the healing process?
o Can precise ITEM programming be developed that targets specific illnesses and disease?
o Can a supportive environment be created to encourage personal transformation

Core Theme
Change is always happening. Persons’ can allow positive change and/or they can find ways to sabotage themselves.
The ITEM model encourages the positive change related to awareness, learning, faith , and acceptance. The primary assumption is our individual experiences can be a catalyst for wellness, growth and healing.
Positive change with focus, commitment and determination can be transformational; and the healing process may include: emotions and feelings related to the past; the present; current situations; and the future.

Investigative Research Questions
o Can Life Configuration Patterns (LCP)
[Link]   serve as quantified predictors for: personal wellbeing; reduced health care cost; and limiting the onset and severity of periodic illness and chronic disease.
o Can ITEM programming which includes: group facilitation, experience learning, and transformational change, provide intervention which enhances personal wellbeing; reduced health care cost; and limiting the onset and severity of periodic illness and chronic disease.

Program Fluidity
ITEM can be adapted to accommodate and be integrated into all levels of health care: In-patient medical and/or psychiatric, and outpatient services; as well as persons motivated to make positive changes in daily life patterns.

Summary Information
1: Key Phrases: Describe questions and problems to be investigated
o Is facilitated group therapeutic education an effective method for lowering health care cost
o Can patient become a partner in the health care delivery system and can they assume a degree of personal responsibility in relationship to their illness.
o Can facilitated therapeutic education improve patient’s sense of wellbeing and encourage the healing process
o Can precise therapeutic education programming be developed that targets specific illnesses and disease.

2: Why are these question/problems important to address?
Health Care costs are soaring and we continue to invest in high cost medications, surgical techniques, testing procedures; and reliance of the expert to provide health care answers.
Our unique approach test the effective of group facilitated therapeutic education which encourage patients to assume a degree of personal responsibility and become a partner and actively participate in the treatment of their illness.
One of our theories is that the costs of re-cycling of illness patterns and chronic disease can be reduced with the utilization of group facilitated therapeutic education?

3: What makes this assessment study unique?
As with most psychosocial modalities the ITEM model provides a supportive environment and a cognitive reframing process.
Additionally the ITEM model includes an interviewing and group facilitation process where participants engage in experience learning and they target changes in specific areas of their life. These Life Configuration Patterns are measured and monitored throughout the program and utilized in additional research analysis.
Also the Change and the Transformational Process is an integral aspect of the model. The primary assumption is our individual experiences can be a catalyst for learning, wellness, growth and healing. Positive change with focus and determination can be transformational; and the process includes emotions and feelings related to the past; the present; current situations; and the future.

4: What will we accomplish - How will we measure success
Our intent is to develop quantitative criteria for Life Configuration Patterns (Paragraph: C). These measurements provide a means to test the effectiveness of the Integrated Therapeutic Education Model (ITEM) and to correlate these finding to potential changes in quality of life, participants sense of empowerment, medical diagnosis, and brain functionality.
As measurability and predictability of Life Configuration Patterns increase we will develop specific protocol regimens to target selected personality characteristics, unique medical diagnoses, and illness and disease and categories (Paragraph D).

5: Why do we have a good chance of achieving our goals?
There is a great body of evidence based research supporting the effectiveness of disciplines included in the emerging field of integrative medicine. The Preventive Medicine Research Institute headed by Dr Dean Ornish has directed clinical research for nearly 30 years demonstrating that comprehensive lifestyle changes may begin to reverse even severe coronary heart disease.
In the psychosocial areas where are years of research supporting the effectiveness of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Family Focused Therapy (FFT), and Interpersonal Social Rhythm Therapy (IPSRT).
Our team of research participants has extensive experience in the disciplines of wellness education; change facilitation; and complimentary and integrative medicine techniques. We envision our research providing quantitative measurement to assess functionality related to ITEM programming, Life Configuration Patterns, Neural and Brain sequencing; and Medical diagnosis.

6: Assessment Study Planning
We have developed sequenced operational goals and cost estimates (Paragraphs F & G) which will fit into manageable segments. Our approach is to start small with limited funding.
Each phase of the assessment study will have inherent value and results which can be built upon as the research unfolds.

Detail Information
A: Overview and Intention
This psychosocial program utilizes an extensive questionnaire assessment, dialogue procedure, and a group facilitation process to develop the capacity to quantify and measure changes in Life Configuration Patterns (See Paragraph C).

The project provides the means to quantitatively measure Life Configuration Patterns (LCP) and provide scientific and statistical input for continuing research.  Our intent is to link and quantify the incremental change in Life Configuration Patterns (LCP) and determine correlations between ITEM programming and; participants quality of life, symptomatic conditions, medical diagnoses, and changes in brain functionality.

The ITEM model utilizes group facilitation. The process of group dynamics has potential for many therapeutic positive; some examples include:
o Possible support system and social network
o Variety of perspectives and personal points of view
o Increased opportunity for self expression
o Responsibility for healing is client focused
o Group dynamics can mirror real life situations
o Allows participant opportunity to reflect, be silent, watch

B: Participant Questionnaire and Assessment Procedure
The participant selection process will utilize adverting, referrals, and networking activities. Our intent is to provide a pool of participant that includes a variety of health, wellness, and illness situations.

Participant selection includes an assessment questionnaire and dialogue information. The questionnaire will be utilized to quantitatively measure changes in participants' attitude, behaviors, and current status of health, wellness, and illness situations.

Participants will be initially assessed based on the following selection categories:
o Highly motivated to assume a degree of personal responsibility in the management of their illness/disease.
o Allow health/ wellness professionals a high degree of control in the management and treatment of their illness/disease.
o Have had little success related to the treatment of an illness/disease.

H: Assessment Study Limitations and Future Vision
Our approach is to start small and grow the project as we gain experience. We are confident that with a small pool of participants we can begin to develop accurate and predictable measurements of Life Configuration Patterns. As we gain confidence in our measurements we will then develop ITEM protocol regimens to predict outcomes related to illness and disease categories.

As our research efforts continue we will utilize brain imaging techniques to help us assess, explain and predict brain functionality as a result of our successful clinical outcomes.

Our long term vision is the placement of Therapeutic Education Centers alongside existing heath diagnostic and treatment centers which are now increasingly present in mainstream society. This bridge between therapeutic education and the heath care delivery system can become a catalyst for a variety of business opportunities and community development projects.

An additional vision is to organize a group of professional facilitators, educators; and health and wellness consultants who support an environment for awareness, self discovery, and healing.
Each client participant would be assigned a Life Change Facilitation Specialist. The clients’ discovery, healing and life change process is closely monitored, and they can choose from a variety integrated topics and themes which are facilitated to encourage awareness, discovery, and integrated healing.
